How to set up an external display for your MacBook
The various laptops offered by Apple are ready for use with an external monitor , so no configuration is necessary.
We just have to follow these simple steps:
- We connect the keyboard and mouse. We verify that it works correctly.
- We connect our laptop to an AC power adapter.
- We connect the laptop (with the corresponding adapter if necessary) at one end of the HDMI cable and the external monitor at the other end.
- We wait until we see the image of our computer on the monitor.
- We put the lid down and that’s it.
Unlike the previous example, where the image was “duplicated” on the screen of our laptop and the external monitor, with the method we will see below we will get “extend” the screen of our MacBook .

This way, we can have an application on the screen of our laptop and another application on the external monitor, working as an extended desktop of our laptop .
Once the laptop is connected to the external monitor, we will see in the upper bar an icon that will allow us to select between “Duplicate screen” or “Use as independent screen” .
We select the option “Use as a standalone screen” and that’s it.
Now the external monitor will be an extension of our laptop, being able to drag a window from one screen to the other without problems.
