GangStar West Coast Hustle

The people at Gameloft have kindly provided us with a copy of Gang$tar West Coast Hustle HD a Grand Theft Auto type game for the iOS platform, with versions for the iPhone and also for the iPad , whose version we’ll review in this post as it shines in the videogame scene for this device.

In Gang$tar we play a neighborhood bully who, having just moved to a coastal town, with all the trappings of a California city, has to make his way through the local mafia and earn a little money and a reputation through scams, robberies, muggings, extortion, kidnappings, murders and other crimes throughout the criminal code. As in the GTA , we will be able to steal all kinds of cars from the careless passers-by, we will have several weapons at our disposal and a city wide enough to be able to reach all kinds of challenges and unlockable targets.

Bigger screen means bigger gameplay

Having a bigger screen is when all these kinds of games make the most sense. We can clearly see everything around us, move more freely and somehow not have the view so fixed to miniature sprites, now everything is bigger and looks better, the way to interact with the game changes a lot from an iPad to an iPhone or iPod. The controls are bigger and that makes it much easier to interact with the 3D world that the game offers us. Although, especially in the car control , are quite improvable , we have a steering wheel on screen (I do not recommend it), use the accelerometer (not bad but not the best to control the car) and an on-screen joystick that seems the best alternative, you can activate it in the game options. On the other hand, when we are on foot, the character has very sensitive controls and they work perfectly.

The difficulty is not excessive and we ensure hours of fun even by choosing the lowest level of difficulty . Moreover, the increase in difficulty of the quests is progressive and if we succeed, we can always try again (on payment of some score and money from our character).

A city full of fun

In the city we will have a lot of quests and the possibility to get many challenges , like for example we will get the title of “cold blooded killer” if we kill more than X pedestrians and other challenges that just by going freely around the city we will be able to unblock. Besides it is also good to run away from the police and we will have a lot of hiding places and the map will mark some items to lower the police pressure. In addition we will also have the typical workshops where to repair our vehicle and change the appearance.

There are a large number of car models, from the Hummers and vans to the more sporty models , including the utilities and the bizarre ambulances. There are not big differences between them either, but it is true that an SUV will last us longer than other types of cars and logically it will not accelerate as fast or reach the top speed of a sports car.

As for the weapons arsenal , we can acquire many weapons in the armory and from the fists to the rocket launcher we will have many other possibilities to finish off the bad guys. As the game progresses and we overcome missions, we will discover new weapons and ultimately expand our arsenal. Gang$tar (iTunes Store)

Conclusions and Price of Application

This game is really good, Gameloft has worked hard to give us a title very similar to a GTA on the iOS platform . No doubt controlling the driving a little better wouldn’t have been bad, but overall the gameplay and addiction it creates is very good. We have to applaud the Gameloft gentlemen in the technical section, the graphics and soundtrack are great, maybe the sound effects can be improved a little bit, but without a doubt, the game is really excellent in graphics, sound and playability.

The HD version for the iPad is priced at 5.99 euros, while the version for the iPhone is priced at 3.99 , which is not cheap but, compared to other titles, guarantees fun for several hours and the satisfaction of a job well done, with a great deal of humour and the ability to convert everything that is remarkable about the GTA platform to the iOS for consoles and PCMac.

Thank you Antonio R.!
