expand the internal storage of your MacBook Pro… but think before you do

No matter how you try: it’s getting harder and harder to expand the storage of a Mac . In the past, you could easily change the disk in both iMacs and MacBooks. But as computers have evolved, the task has become more difficult. But as computers have evolved, the task has become more difficult. In the end, someone from an authorized service center has to do it. The storage you buy from the start is the storage you’ll always have.

That’s why Macs that have some potential for expansion have taken on a certain added value. And some manufacturers, aware that there is a strong demand and little technical expertise in the general market, are taking expansion accessories out of the bag that don’t require the use of a screwdriver. This is the case with TarDisk drives .

These small cards are designed to fit into the SD slots of the previous-generation MacBook Pro, but they are not SD cards themselves. They take full advantage of that expansion slot, adding storage to the Mac’s internal drive in a completely transparent manner and without the need to manage an additional drive in the system . Let’s see it with an example.

Por fin podemos decirlo: adiós a los 16 GB de almacenamiento en los dispositivos iOS

tardisk Notice how the repeated drive appears : the Mac detects two drives, but treats it as a single copy twice. You can see that TarDisk touches some components of the system kernel in order to do this.

Choose wisely

The advantage here is that this expansion is very suitable for users who are not very knowledgeable: you literally “enlarge” the disk, which is what most inexperienced people think of when they want to expand the storage of their machine. It’s also an enlargement that is aesthetically correct and doesn’t involve any extra bulges. Install and don’t touch anymore .

As a disadvantage we have the loss of the SD slot and the permanence of the change : once you do it you can’t remove the TarDisk card from the computer and you also have to format it if you want to go back to the computer’s default storage. So, if you are a photographer and you usually work with SD cards, you better not consider this. Unless you have an SD card reader to solve the problem, of course: then it doesn’t matter.

But if your goal is to make more of the life of an older MacBook by giving it more disk space and by not having to touch that card, TarDisk cards can be an interesting purchase. Too bad this idea doesn’t work with the new MacBook, which no longer has an SD slot to rely on an external reader.

TarDisk cards are sold from their official website at a base price of $149 which increases depending on the storage you have from your Mac. Beware: card sizes change even with every size of MacBook Pro. Choose your computer carefully before you go shopping.
